I have a certain confession to make: sleep is my guilty pleasure.
It is a
pleasure on one hand because I sincerely believe that sleep is one of the most
pleasant experiences that you can have in the world. For one thing, it is
probably the only place in the world where I can take refuge from my own mind.
For another, the refreshed feeling that you have as you open your eye is something
no other sensations can ever replicate.
I like
sleeping so much that I often feel like my ideal form of vacation will be just
me in a perpetual state of tiredness so that I can just sleep all day without
doing anything.
As you
might have noticed, I have only been singing praises to sleep thus far, so what
is it about sleep that I feel guilty about?
Well, there
is the fact that when you are sleeping you are not doing much of anything. You can't work, play and/or watch anything. Every once in a while, you might get lucky and experience a pleasant dream while you are sleeping, but otherwise it is just blank.
All of us
on planet earth have only about 24 hours to spend within a day with about 3-8
hours of that time spent on sleeping. Personally, I feel like this is quite a
waste in terms of productivity.
Granted,
the purpose of sleeping is to rest the body to prevent any unwanted physical or
mental harm, so in that sense sleeping is productive. Having said that
however, imagine how many things that we can do more in life if we do not need
to sleep.
Then again, maybe the notion of productivity is overrated. After all, if life’s purpose is to savor each and every experience that exists, maybe liking sleep is not really something to be worked out about.
